Greetings Fellow DGCers:
Although I’m sure we have more hot weather in store for us this summer, I can’t help but feel a slight hint of fall in the air — the cool evenings, the breeze, the achy muscles from stacking firewood…
It’s been a good albeit warm summer. Those of us lucky enough to attend the August club meeting at Kit Carson Resort at Silver Lake were treated to beautiful weather and an absolutely lovely view from the porch. Twenty-four members and guests made the trek up the hill to a cooler climate and pretty darn good food and service. I stopped by there the day after our meeting looking for a place to eat only to find that as of August 3rd (the day after our meeting), they were going to be closed for lunch! I guess we were special enough to keep them open until August 2nd!
The birthday lunch was held on the 9th at the Beef and Brew in Diamond Springs. Excellent food and great conversation. Thank you Janet for making the arrangements. The next birthday lunch will be held on September 13th. I’m sure Janet will have something wonderful planned for us. Birthday celebrators for September are: Doris Morley, Judith Jordan, Pat Schoggins and Tom Schulz.
We have a big event coming up on Sunday, August 27th from 8:00 – 4:30. The Peddlers and Pickers Antique and Community Faire will be held at Backroads Barn, 3700 Fort Jim Road (off Newtown Rd) in Placerville. This event has been happening for the last 8 years and is sure to be a fun opportunity for our club to raise money. The Crafts Team headed by Sylvia Hamblin has worked hard to create a large inventory of hand crafted items to sell at the Faire. We will need members to help sell these lovely items so please come join us for a few hours or all day under the large oak trees on the lawn. If you would like to help with the club’s crafts booth, please contact Sylvia to let her know when you can be there. For more information about the event, please contact Mary Bourn, our contact for the Faire.
Information about our next DGC meeting from Pat Schoggins: Our September 6th meeting will be at Lotus Bonsai Nursery at 11 AM. The attached directions are from CVS, so I would suggest meeting there at 10 AM to carpool. I also attached the farm trail sign to look for after you cross Lotus Rd. There are several. Since cell phone coverage is spotty up there, please be sure to print the directions to bring with you. Please bring your lunch; water will be provided. Scott will be giving us a tour of his lovely, extensive Bonsai collection and talking about the different species, how old they are and where they came from. Many are from Japan. He also sells plants, pots, and planting materials and provides instructions. He takes cash, check or credit card. After his presentation, we will have our meeting and lunch on his patio by the pool. Please call me (Pat Schoggins) by Sept. 5th if you plan on going, so we know how many to expect. My cell is on the roster. Looking forward to a lovely day.
