Bloomin’ News
July 2022
Hello Ladies,
Summer is here!!
Our July 6th meeting had 28 members in attendance with no new members or guests.
A big thank you to John & Carolyn of Bluestone Meadow in Placerville for hosting our meeting and their presentation on lavender. They have 5 acres of different varieties and sell several products they make from the flowers. John gave a presentation on lavender plants, explained and showed us how they extract the lavender oil, the best varieties that can be used for cooking with the flowers and answered many questions. They had plants for sale and members were able to go out into the fields after the meeting and pick the flowers. If you’re interested in propagating lavender, see the last page of the attached July 6 Meeting Minutes.
Our June Wagon Train was a success with selling root beer floats, a bake sale and dog biscuits. Our total proceeds from the sales were $430.00. It was a great day with the weather just perfect. Thank you to all who baked the wonderful goodies and volunteered at the booth.
The 4th of July Parade Bake Sale was a great success. Total sales after some expenses were $682.00. In addition to the booth with all the wonderful goodies, Lauran and Theresa had decorated red wagons they took up and down Pony Express Trail selling water and baked goods to all those waiting for the parade. Our booth was in front of Pony Express Shipping, owners Bill & Susan were so kind as to help us set up the tables and canopies, donate popcorn and more! Thank you Bill & Susan. They asked if we would be back next year as they enjoyed the day, we did not have that decided then, but now do and YES we will be back!! We also sold the last 4 wooden flags we had ( a craft project pre covid) for a total of $80.00. Thank you again to our wonderful bakers and booth volunteers. A down home good time for everyone!
National Night Out is Tuesday August 2nd this year. Last year we had a booth and bake sale. With 2 bake sales in the last 2 months we decided not to do one and give all our wonderful bakers a rest! We could have a booth with Dogwood Garden Club information with no bake sale. Such was talked about at the July meeting. An email went out asking for volunteers. If no volunteers are available we will pass on being at the event this year.
Judy Morgan Park in town is cleaned up of needles & pinecones 6 months out of the year. This year the clean ups will be done on the 2nd Saturday of the month. The Dogwood Garden Club does the months of October, November and December. We have budgeted club money along with a grant from Waste Management (thru CEDAPP) and the gap being filled by an anonymous club donor, to pay for a dumpster at each clean up. We will no longer, at least this year, have to bag and remove/dispose of the many, many bags!
Gardens – Team Leader Jan Roman-Gonzales has been working with the garden committee. They have cleaned up the garden box at the entrance to Sly Park Recreation, Jenkinson Lake. The memorial garden over at the elementary school has no water so the area is not in good shape. Jan has been helping and volunteering at the school with their gardens for the classes.
Our raffle this month was a great success with raising $180 with proceeds going to our Pollock Pines Friends of the Library. A thank you from Pat and Marilyn who indicated the funds will help with programs and book purchases. Thank you everyone who donated the wonderful raffle items.
Valerie suggested that we create a new DGC Cookbook. The idea was very well received. Barbara will lead the project with the help of Valerie and Denise. Look for Barbara’s future email for details!
Birthday Lunch was held last Wednesday at Ring of Fire in Camino. Birthdays this month are: Barbara Thomas, Carole Mc Namara, Jan Slominski, Judy Jackson, Marilu Blau, Sue Granno and Teri Munyon. Happy Birthday ladies!
Interest List/Activities – An activities sign up sheet has been created for those members who would like to find others interested in the following activities: Walking, Hiking and Kayaking. The sign up sheet is out on the table at all meetings. Find your interest and contact other members for some fun!
We bowl the first Tuesday of the month, 10:00 am at the Knotty Pines Bowl in town. $2.00 Tuesday! We play 2 games. Shoes are $4.00 if needed.
We received a letter asking if our club would be interested in helping the impacted residences of the Caldor Fire in the Grizzly Flat area by providing seeds and plants to help them with the regeneration of their town. They also asked if we would be interested in joining an event with the Westslope Foundation Outreach, a non-profit that is providing support for their town. There was a lot of interest expressed by our members at the meeting. I have sent a letter to the woman who sent the request. There was only her name and a PO Box. I asked her to call or email me so we could talk and maybe have a few members go visit her and see how the club might be best able to help them. Hope to hear back from her.
Below is a list of the next 3 meetings and locations.
Also attached below are the minutes from the July 6, 2022 Meeting.
Hope to see you at next month’s meeting!
Debbie
